金言

6/16/2009 Warmth for Cold Hearts (Psalm 78) |
Scriptures: | Psalm 78-83 |
Heart of the Passage: | Psalm 78 |
Overview
Asaph's final contribution to the Psalter is found in today's reading. There he recounts Israel's history of disobedience (78) and cries out to God to restore His people to die place of blessing (79-80). A lament over the nation's failure to obey God (81) is followed by an appeal for God's justice to prevail over Israel's oppressors (82-83). |

Your Daily Walk
A woman asked her physician, "Doctor, why am I seized with these restless longings for the glamorous and faraway?"
"My dear lady," he replied, "those are the usual symptoms of abundant comfort in the home and ingratitude in the heart."
Three times in Psalm 78, Asaph points out how the nation Israel "put God to the test" by placing demands on God (v. 18), forgetting His past deliverance (v. 42), and disobeying His com¬mands (v. 56). In each case, the problem was ingratitude—the subtle temptation first to grow accustomed to ... then to expect . .. and finally to demand . . . the blessings of God.
Ingratitude m the face of God's gracious provision chipped away at the nation's relationship with God. Is ingratitude doing the same in your life? How do you relate to the blessings of God? Has abundance produced apathy or appreciation? Has your heart grown cold from the consistency of God's provision?
The gospel hymn is still a timely reminder:
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings—see what God hath done!
Try it! In the next two minutes can you list 25 ways God has enriched your life—25 blessings for which you want to teH Him "thanks"? Remember, it is with gratitude that life becomes rich!

Insight
A Millennium of God's Mercy
Psalm 78, the second largest psalm, might well be subtitled, "From Zoan to Zion." In the space of just 57 verses (12-68) Asaph traces Israel's history from bondage in Egypt to David's rule in Zion—a thousand-year record of God's faithfulness! |

The more we count the blessings we have, the less we crave the luxuries we haven't. |
