Chinese3/7/2009 士師時代的背景English

3/7/2009 Review and Preview of the Judges
Scriptures:Judges 1-5
Heart of the Passage:Judges 2
Overview

In spite of God's persistent commands and Joshua's constant warnings, the people choose to accommodate, rather than annihilate, the Canaanites, thereby surrounding themselves with godless and immoral influences. Because of the nation's compromising attitude, God allows neighboring powers to test Israel by war to find out if they will obey the command¬ments of the Lord (3:1-4). Failing these tests, Israel settles into a downward spiral spiritually, politically, and morally. Seven recur¬ring cycles of sin show that indeed the period of the judges is one in which "Every man [does] that which [isl right in his own eyes" (17:6; 21:25).

Your Daily Walk

If you've ever planted a garden or tried to maintain a lawn, you have no doubt encountered weeds, which are not only ugly but can ruin your crop or turf.
The worst part about weeds is weeding, an unpleasant chore that can be accomplished in two ways: (1) by pulling out the weed, roots and all; or (2) by lopping off the weed at the ground level. Both methods appear to accomplish the same purpose, but only one really works.
For the Israelites, the land of Canaan could be likened to a garden full of weeds. For a while, the people diligently uprooted their enemies. But as time passed and the recollection of God's urgent commands grew fuzzy, the people became halfhearted in the task. At first there were no visible consequences. But later, (he devastation would be evident to all as immorality and idolatry flourished in the nation.
Look at the "garden" of your life. Do you see any weeds that need pulling? A nagging habit ... a negative attitude. Resist the urge to "plow them under," hoping they will disappear. Instead, deal with the root of the problem. You'll be glad you did.

Insight

Half a Victory Is No Victory at All —
The seeds of Israel's downfall are visible throughout chapter 1. Read verses 19, 21, 27-33 and watch for the common element that would later lead to Israel's undoing. (Hint: Watch for the word bur.)

Adage

Be careful that your victories do not bring with them the seeds of future defeats.
