Scriptures:Romans 1-3
Heart of the Passage:Romans 1;3:21-31
Overview

In his introductory greeting to the believers in Rome, the apostle Paul states the theme of his letter: the gospel of God in Jesus Christ (1:1, 3, 9, 16). Writing like an attorney, Paul begins his legal brief by describing the helpless condition of humanity. A rebellious nature has led to rejection of the Creator and worship of the creation. God in turn has permitted the sinful nature of human beings to express the fullness of its corruption. Civilized or savage, Jew or Gentile, the whole human race stands helpless before God. Truly, "All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (3:23).

CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 3

Humanity's Rejection of God

Humanity's Judgment from God

Humanity's Helplessness Before God

"There is none righteous, no, not one" (3:10)

Your Daily Walk

Two Christians were talking about the president of a corporation who had died recently. The executive had been a moral man and a philanthropist, but an avowed atheist who had made no pretense of believing in Jesus Christ as his Savior, One friend mused, "It's hard to believe he won't be in heaven. He was such a good man, so thoughtful of his employees, so generous." To which the other gently responded with the words of John 3:18, "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
Perhaps you, too, have difficulty coming to grips with the lost condition of sinful people ... or with your own lostness apart from Christ, Read Romans 3 again, thoughtfully, until the solemn truth of human depravity sinks in. Humanity's only hope—and yours—is faith in Christ's finished work. It's as simple as accepting God's offer of "salvation to every one that believeth" (1:16). Will you in believing faith come to Jesus Christ right now?

Insight

God Has No Favorites (2:11) —
Jew and Gentile stand on an equal footing before God. Paul points out that if the Jew's ancient priority of privilege counted for anything, it meant priority of responsibility, Jesus reminded His followers that much is required of those who receive much (Luke 12:48)

Adage

We never break God's laws; we only break ourselves upon them.
