Scriptures:Ezekiel 7-11
Heart of the Passage:Ezekiel 7,11
Overview

In a colorful series of visions, Ezekiel next foresees the what, why, and how of God's judgment upon Judah. The what: total destruction of Jerusalem and the departure of God's glory from the temple. The why: generations of idolatry, wickedness, and spiritual indifference. The how: through the cruel Babylonians, God's handpicked agents of judgment. But the harshness of the sentence is tempered by a tender reminder: A remnant will survive, receive sanctuary in a foreign country, and return again to the Land of Promise.

Your Daily Walk

Even the world's finest mountain climber ascends the tallest precipice by the smallest of increments: step by step, yard by yard. Progress from bottom to top may appear gradual and slow. The climber may not even notice he is making headway. But the thrill of the climb comes when—standing at the top—he discovers how far he has ascended one step at a time.
Judah had ascended no mountain. In fact, the nation had been descending for generations. But their descent had been slow and gradual: one sin, one wicked king following another. The downward movement continued until the nation hit bottom.
God's Word is described in James 1:23-24 as a mirror, reflecting a person's true spiritual condition. As you look into God's Word today, what do you see: a person like Paul, who made it his ambition to "press toward the mark [the summit] ... of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14)? Or a person who is sliding downward by gradual increments of unrepented sin and sloppy spiritual habits? Find a hill near your home where you can take a vigorous walk—and have 3 vigorous talk with God about the direction of your life. It can make a mountain of difference!

Insight

Ezekiel’s Hair-raising Revelation
In the temple vision of chapter 8, God's messenger grabs Ezekiel by a lock of his hair to transport him to the scene—a painful but effective way of ensuring that Ezekiel doesn't miss the point!

Adage

Sin may open bright as the morning, but it will end dark as night.
