2/14/2013 Spying Out the Land |
Scriptures: | Numbers 13-16 |
Heart of the Passage: | Numbers 13:1-2, 26-33;14:20-35 |
Overview
Following the Lord's instructions, Moses selects one representative from each of the 12 tribes to form a scouting party. Their assignment: to spy out the defenses of the land and bring back a sample of the produce grown there. The 12 obey and, like many a committee, return with a divided report. Ten see only the obstacles; two see the opportunities. The nation, disheartened and faithless, threatens lo stone Moses and return to Egypt rather than face what lies ahead. As a result, God condemns that unbelieving generation to 40 years of fruitless wandering in the wilderness. |

Your Daily Walk
Every part of the human body gets tired eventually . . . except the tongue! It is no accident the Bible describes the tongue as sharp (Psalm 140:3), biting (Proverbs 25:23), and untamable (James 3:8).
Do you (like the Israelites) have trouble controlling your tongue? Then enlist the aid of your spouse or a close Christian friend in "Operation Salty Speech" {Colossians 4:6). Every time he or she catches you in an ungracious remark during the next seven days, you must pay 25 cents. Try it! What you lose in material wealth you'll more than regain in spiritual maturity.

Insight
... 8 ... 9 ... 10 ... You're Out! (14:22)
On 10 separate occasions the Israelites grumbled and murmured against God. Can you find what prompted each complaint?

Adage
So often the first screw that works loose in a person's head is the one that holds the tongue in place. |
