Chinese10/31/2013 上帝兒子的苦難English

10/31/2013 Suffering of the Son of God
Scriptures:John 18-21
Heart of the Passage:John 19-20
Overview

        John's vantage point throughout his gospel has been the cross of Calvary (2:4, 21-22; 7:6, 39; 11:51-52; 12:16). His account of the Crucifixion parallels closely that of the other gospel writers, though he does include certain unique details. But rather than trying to be creative, John writes to be convincing "that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God;
and that believing ye might have life through his name" (20:31).

Recommission

Your Daily Walk

        You have read it about four times in the space of a single month, but have you read it... really? The emotion-filled events of the Crucifixion are familiar to most. Perhaps too familiar. Judas' betrayal . . . Peter's denial . . . Pilate's concession .. . the crowd's frenzy ... the rough-hewn cross... the nail-pierced hands . .. the bleeding side ... pain and suffering beyond human imagination ... love no words can adequately express.
        As you close your reading of the Gospels this month, let your heart overflow with gratitude for the unspeakable gift of God's Son. Perhaps Isaac Watts's familiar refrain will help you in the process:
        See, from His head, His hands. His feet,
        Sorrow and love flow mingled down;
        Did e'er such lave and sorrow meet,
        Or thorns compose so rich a crown ?
        Were the whole realm of nature mine.
        That were a present far too small;
        Love so amazing, so divine,
        Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Insight

Silence Is Not Golden but Crimson
        Nowhere do the Gospels give a detailed description of the process of Roman crucifixion—a silence due in part to the grisly nature of the execution. Read Psalm 22:1-21 for a graphic depiction of the physical, mental, and spiritual torture Jesus endured on the cross.

Adage

The crucifixion of Christ is the pivot around which all the events of the ages revolve.
