Scriptures:Judges 9-12
Heart of the Passage:Judges 9,11
Overview

Often when a ruler dies, his son succeeds him to the throne. But what happens when the ruler has 70 sons? Trouble! Especially when one of the sons has such strong aspirations for his father's position that he attempts to murder all his brothers. Gideon's son Abimelech attempts just such a coup. His rash actions are a prelude to three stormy years in power—a reign cut short by a divinely guided millstone. By contrast, Jephthah, the illegitimate son of a harlot, zealously leads Israel in the ways of God—though his zeal also gets him into trouble!

Your Daily Walk

"The measure of a man is what he does with power." Those words, written centuries ago by a Greek philosopher, have more than a grain of truth, especially when applied to Abimelech. If his character were measured solely by what he did with power, the score would be low indeed. Abimelech's tactics were both brutal and foolish. He first murdered his brothers, then surrounded himself with people of like mind. The result was predictable—and lamentable.
It is easy to look at Abimelech's actions and conclude, ''I could never do something like that!" But think for a moment about all the subtle ways you can use (and abuse) power: telling half-truths, being seen only with the "right" people, using others as stairsteps to success. Though these actions aren't as violent as Abimelech's. they violate the spirit of Christ's teaching, "He that is greatest among you shall be your servant" (Matthew 23:11).
As you conclude your devotional time today, look for a positive principle from the life of Gideon, and a negative principle from the life of Ahimelech, regarding how to use the power and influence God has given you to bring glory to Him.

Insight

Oh, Those Terrible Tongue Twisters —
After defeating the Kphraimites, the Gileadites seized the fords of the river to prevent the retreating army from returning home. One by one, men who came to the crossing were asked to say the word Shibboleth. Those who pronounced the sh as s were identified by their dialect as Ephraimites and were executed.

Adage

No statue was ever erected to the memory of a man or woman who thought it best to leave well enough alone.
