Chinese7/12/2009 解釋生命的矛盾English

7/12/2009 Explaining Life's Inconsistencies
Scriptures:Ecclesiastes 7-12
Heart of the Passage:Ecclesiastes 8,12
Overview

Not only is there futility in what you do and what you have, but apart from God there is futility in what you are. The just are treated as if they were the wicked (8:14). One sinner can undo the work of many good men (9:18). Even moral, upright character seemingly profits for nothing. But once again, God's perspective turns vanity into purpose. 'Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God" (8:12). "Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth . . . and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment" (11:9).

Chapters 7-10

Chapters 11-12

The Vanity of Being

(Wise, Good, Mortal)

The Solution to Life's Vanity:

"Fear God and Obey Him"

Life Under the Sun

Life Above the Sun

Your Daily Walk

Every blessing from God carries with it a corresponding responsibility.
Are you young (11:9-l 0) ? Then God holds you accountable for the way you use your strength and vitality.
Are you a member of the Geritol generation (12:1-7)? Don't use that as an alibi! God holds you equally accountable for the years of experience you have accumulated.
In the final two verses of Ecclesiastes, the Preacher summarizes his thoughts. Life at any age apart from God is empty and futile, regardless of how wise, wealthy, or industrious you are. Things can never fill the void which God desires to fill in your life. Therefore, Tear God, and keep his commandments" (12:13).
Analyze your life according to what you do, what you have, and what you are. Is God the focus of your activities? Is God more important than your possessions? Is God the center of your being? If not, what needs to change . . . today?

Insight

An Allegory of Old Age (12:3-7)
As you read chapter 12, did you note the literal elements of old age that are pictured in allegorical form? For example, "keepers of the house" = hands and arms; "strong men" = legs; "grinders" = teeth; "those that look out of the windows" = eyes.

Adage

A useless life is only an early death.
