3/26/2013 David’s United Nation
Scriptures:2 Samul 5-7
Heart of the Passage:2 Samul 5:1-5; 7:1-29
Overview

With the death of Ish-Bosheth, the people of Israel transfer their allegiance to David as their rightful king. As his first official act, David conquers the strategic Jebusite stronghold of Jerusalem and makes it the new capital of the nation. But something more than political and military reform is necessary. The worship of God must be returned to its place of primacy. Knowing this, David makes plans to bring the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem and build a fitting place for it to reside. In the process he learns some hard lessons about doing God's will in God's way and in God's timing.

Your Daily Walk

Think carefully about each statement and decide whether it is true or false:
T___F___1. If God has placed a desire in my heart, then it must be His will for me to accomplish it.
T___F___2. If my goal is to please and glorify God, then it is really insignificant how I go about it.
T___F___3- Doing God's will in something other than God's way cannot truly be God's will.
David had two ambitions in the early years of his reign: to bring the ark to Jerusalem, and to build a house for God there. To accomplish the first, David chose the expedient—rather than the obedient—mode of transportation, and it cost an unsuspecting man his life. David's wish to build a majestic temple for God was commendable, but it simply wasn't God's plan for David's life.
It's wonderful to dream big dreams for God. But be sure those dreams are implemented in God's way, in God's timing, and with the people God intends to use. It was David's son Solomon whom God wanted to build the temple—and who penned these fitting words well worth memorizing: "A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps" (Proverbs 16:9).

Insight

Learning a Life-and-Death Lesson (6:3-7) —
For perhaps 50 years the ark had been considered little more than a piece of furniture. God's stern judgment upon Uzzah for touching it marked the beginning of a new era in Israel's worship in which the people recognized again the sanctity of God's presence.

Adage

Choosing the expedient way instead of the obedient way can be a hindrance to your furtherance.
