9/22/2013 A House Half Built
Scriptures:Haggai 1-2
Heart of the Passage:Haggai 2:1-11
Overview

The last three books of the Old Testament (Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi) are the so-called "Postexilic Prophets" because each was addressed to the returnees from the Babylonian Exile. Under the leadership of Zerubbabel, the people began the task of rebuilding the temple (Ezra 1-6). But fourteen years later, the temple foundation is covered with weeds rather than walls. Instead of completing the house of God, the people are busy building their own homes and careers. Into this sorry scene of misguided priorities steps Haggai to exhort the people to put first things first. Halfhearted obedience. Haggai reminds them, will never result in God's wholehearted blessing!

Finding God's Blessing

Your Daily Walk

Think a minute about the following sentence, then jot down your responses: "The five most difficult problems I wrestle with in my Christian life are ..."
Chances are good that your list included the problem of priorities ... maintaining balance in your walk with God. How much do you pray, and when? How much do you give, and to whom? When do you study God's Word, meet with God's people? And how do you fit all that around your responsibilities at work, at home, in the dorm, in the community?
The returning exiles allowed good things to replace God's best in their lives. It didn't happen overnight. But gradually, their time and energy were diverted into building something good (their own homes) instead of building God's best (the temple). Read the challenging words of Matthew 6:33. Then examine the good, better, and best priorities in your own life. What needs to change about the five priorities you've listed in the margin?

Insight

Putting First Things First —
Haggai assesses the nation's stagnant condition and summarizes it in 1:7-11: "Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; ... Why?... Because of mine house that is waste and ye run every man unto his own house." This eternal principle of making the Lord and His work your first priority is echoed by Jesus in Matthew 6:33: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Adage

Do not have your concert first and tune your instruments afterward. Begin the day with God.
