Scriptures:Read Psalms 45, 46&47
Key Verse:"Cod reigns over the nations; Cod sits on His holy throne."¡]Psalm 47:8¡^
Overview

When Psalm 45 is studied with the spiritual eye, one can clearly see that it is a Messianic Psalm. It paints a beautiful picture of Jesus Christ, the royal and majestic Bridegroom coming for His well-prepared bride, the Church (Revelation 19:7). In the immediate context, however, the psalm was a wedding hymn which was likely sung at royal weddings. It is difficult to ascertain for which earthly king it was originally composed.

The psalmist declares that his tongue was as the pen of a "ready writer" (45:lb). He was prepared in his spirit as a prophet to utter and to write as the Holy Spirit inspired. With these beautiful words of praise to the King, we can envision the majesty of His coming for His bride. He is more beautiful than any mortal. The Bridegroom's words reflect the divine grace within His heart (45:2). Who but our Lord Jesus is full of grace, "truth, humility, and righteousness" (45:4). He will "ride prosperously" as a conquerer when He comes for His bride (45:3-5; Revelation 6:2). Who but our Lord Jesus carries a scepter of righteousness and has a throne that will last forever and ever (45:6). These very words (45:6-7) were applied to Jesus Christ by the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews (Hebrews 1:8-9).

All believers are children of the King. The Bride is the King's daughter, and she is being counselled that marriage to the Bridgroom entails the separation from everything familiar to her so she might cling only to her husband (45:10-11). At the rapture, all the saints of God will leave everything behind to go and live with the Groom, our King Jesus. There will be no regrets; it will be the happiest occasion for the bride, who is described as "glorious within", for she will be pure and undefiled (2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:27). She will enter the King's awesome palace which will be her new home. The Bridegroom is now preparing the place for His bride,, and one day it will be the site of the joyous Marriage Supper of the Lamb, where the bride will worship Him (45:11, 14-15; John 14:1-3; Revelation 19:7-10).

Psalm 46 is a beautiful poem that sings out the praises of God and gives assurance that He is our refuge and help. The historical situation of this psalm may have been when the mighty forces of Sennacherib encamped against Jerusalem, during the days of Hezekiah, and God miraculously delivered them by sending His angel to smite 185,000 in one night (2 Kings 19:20-37), thus putting an end to the war (46:8-9).

The psalm gives a wonderful example of peace in the midst of turmoil. Whatever the storm may be on the outside, we can have confidence that inside the refuge of the Lord there will be calm and rest, and those inside need not fear. These storms build character in the believer, as well as spiritual strength, increasing his faith and making him steadfast upon the "Rock of Ages" that will not be shaken. Jerusalem was not shaken because the Lord of Hosts (over His angelic army), the God of Jacob (the faithful God of the covenant), was with them ("Emmanuel", Matthew 1:23; Romans 8:31). Although there is no river in Jerusalem, God sustained and gave joy to His people with the river of His grace (46:4-5; Isaiah 58:11). With His all-powerful voice, the Lord of Hosts uttered His will, "the earth melted" and the war was over (46:6; cf. Hebrews 12:26). He will do the same in the apocalyptic battle when the Prince of Peace will end all wars on earth and bring universal peace. At that time, all will know that He is God and He will be exalted in all the earth.

Psalm 47 is a continuation of the previous psalm, and it too has a prophetic aspect. It is a celebration song to the exalted King, our Lord Jesus, who will reign and rule over all the earth. After the Lord won the battle for His people (Psalm 46), He ascended back to His great throne. The psalmist now calls Him the Lord Most High who is worthy of universal praise, for He is the great King over the whole earth (cf. Jeremiah 10:6-7; 1 Timothy 1:17; 6:15-16). He will subdue all peoples (2 Corinthians 15:24-28). His great deeds demand shouts of triumph and claps of joy. His transcendence and majesty demand endless songs of praise. All believers in Jesus, the people of the God of Abraham, will gather together to worship and exalt His Holy Name (cf. Romans 4:16-17; Galatians 3:7,14, 29). To them whom He loves, the Lord will give an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance (47:4; 1 Peter 1:4). What a wonderful hope we have in the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

Prayer

Dear Lord, our hearts are filled with joyful anticipation as we read these prophetic psalms. Oh that we, Your bride, will be prepared for Your coming and continue to reach others until that glorious day!
