2/4/2009 Personal Purity in Daily Life |
Scriptures: | Leviticus 11-15 |
Heart of the Passage: | Leviticus 11:45-47; 13:59; 14:54-57 |
Overview
Chapters 11-15 set forth laws regarding uncleanness caused by animals, birth, leprosy, and discharges. Holiness demands a holy lifestyle. Ceremonial purity is an indispensable part of worshiping a holy God, though it did impose some restrictions. For the Israelites this meant dietary laws, strict health requirements, and temporary quarantines after contact with potentially harmful substances. The word unclean occurs more than 100 times in these chapters, showing that ceremonial uncleanness (which is in fact disobedience) is no small matter with God. |

Your Daily Walk
Rules and restrictions bring out the absolute worst in people! There is something about seeing a sign that says "Wet Paint—Do Not Touch" that makes us a bit "touchy." Commands such as "Keep Off the Grass" or "Don't Feed the Chimps" or "Speed Limit 55" seem to whisper in our ears, "I dare you ..."
But did yon ever stop to think why those rules are there? Someone is trying to look out for the best interests of you and others. They know that fresh paint looks better on park benches than on pants; that grass stays prettier when a horde of people isn't trampling it to death; that chimps don't survive well on a diet of Cheetos; and that gas—and people—last longer when driving safely. Such rules are for your own good.
The same was true for many of Israel's laws. God gave them for His people's protection: so no scavenger animals for dinner, no contact with leprous people, and plenty of baths! In today's passage look for ways God protected His people through the laws He gave. He has the same desire for you! |
Insight
Leprosy Then and Now
It is doubtful that modern-day leprosy (which cripples and disfigures) is the same as Levitical or New Testament “leprosy” (which was a white, scaly disease, much like eczema or psoriasis).
