Face it! As a young person you’ve got a lifetime of choices ahead of you. Some of your more important decisions will include, “Should I go to college, and if so, where should I go?” “What career best suits my abilities?” “Who am I going to marry?” But of all the decisions you will ever make, one stands out as the most important: “ What will I do with Jesus Christ?”

Maybe you’ve already made the decision to receive Jesus Christ as you Savior. Maybe you’re still undecided. I will never forget the night I made that crucial decision while attending summer camp high in the mountains of Argentina.

●A CARING COUNSELOR

I loved camp―the games, the stories, the singing the exploring. Even my counselor, Frank, was okay. But I soon discovered that every night after lights out Frank would wake up one of the guys, get him out of bed and ―with a Bible in one hand and a flashlight in the other―take him for a walk outside. There, under the stars, he would talk to the camper about believing in Jesus.

Even though I felt guilty for my sins and knew I needed to receive the Lord Jesus as my Savior, I didn’t want to face the issue with anyone. Each night I breathed a sigh of relief when my counselor picked someone else. But I knew my turn was coming. Eventually every other guy had talked to Frank, so when he came into the tent that last night of camp, I knew he was coming for me!

I pretended I was asleep, thinking he would go away. “Come on, Palau,” he said, “get up.” I didn’t know it, but this was going to be the best night of camp.

We went outside and sat down on afallen tree. Any minute it was going to rain. “Luis,” Frank asked, “are you a Christian or not?” He knew that I came from a Christian family and could say the right words and sing the right songs. But he wasn’t convinced.

●THE MOMENT OF TRUTH

What could I say? “I don’t think so,” I hedged. “Well, it’s not a matter of whether you think so or not. Are you or aren’t you?” “No, I’m not.” A raindrop hit me on the nose. “If you died tonight, would you go to heaven or hell?” I sat quietly for a moment, somewhat taken aback, and then answered, “I’m going to hell.” “Is that where you want to go?” “No,” I replied. “Then why are you going there?” I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know.” Frank opened his Bible to Romans and read: “If you confess with your mouth, Luis, ‘Jesus is Lord’, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you, Luis, will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved” (Romans 10: 9-10)

He was looking at me again. “Luis, do you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead?” “Yes, I do,” I replied. “Then what do you have to do next to be save?”

By now it was raining harder. I hesitated, so my counselor had me read Romans 10:9 once more: “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’… you will be saved.”

I knew I was ready to commit my life to Jesus. Frank put his arm around me and led me in prayer. Right there, sitting on that fallen log in the rain, I made the greatest decision of my life. Then, to avoid getting drenched, we sprinted back to the tent.

●A NEW SON IN THE FAMILY

On my cot, I crawled under the blanket with my flashlight and wrote the date in my Bible, along with “I received Jesus Christ as my Savior.” I could hardly sleep, I was so excited about committing my life to Jesus. I knew I was saved. I was a member of the family of God. I had eternal life because Jesus said, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28).

●YOUR GREATEST DECISION

Through prayer you can receive Jesus into your life right now, right where you are. Prayer is simply talking to God, as I did on that rainy night so many years ago. You can pray the following prayer or a similar one of your own: ” Thank you, God, for offering me eternal life even though I don’t deserve it. I confess my sin against You and acknowledge Jesus as my Lord. You raised Him from the dead and now you have made me eternally alive, too. Thank you for caring enough to make sure I became a Christian today.”
